History

Prior to 1987, the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce was a subsidiary of the New Castle County, Delaware Chamber and was formed by the New Castle County group, primarily, as an outlet for its insurance sales. In 1987, the Board of Directors of the Chamber voted to declare its independence and, for the first time, a part-time Executive Director was hired. During 1987 the Chamber moved steadily toward independence and, as of January 1, 1988 became a completely autonomous entity. Through the efforts of several influential Cecil County citizens, a start-up campaign of around was donated by local business and government which, in addition to the dues structure, enabled the Chamber to survive its first couple of years while it was becoming established and developing its programs and fundraising activities.
